Rain did NOT stop play ?
Another day of downpours but fortunately for the Hunters, the weather conditions didn’t dampen their spirits as they showed the best team effort so far this season.
Playing against Wisbech 2’s who were one point above them, the Hunters set out their stall early with some lovely passing play and great reactions, turning over the ball every time Wisbech ventured anywhere near the D. The composed defence linked beautifully with the midfield on the counter attack who then threaded some beautiful passes through to the forward line. This creative play bore fruit when Emily Stevenson found the goal after only 4 minutes. A mere 7 minutes later, Maria Harrison connected with an Amy Wilkinson pass, with a great tap in to secure our second goal. Then at just over 20 minutes, not to let the forwards get all the glory, defender Pam Begg found herself on the edge of the D and, when no tackle was forthcoming, slotted the ball into the bottom left hand corner, Hunters finished the half 3-0 up!
Captain Paula Bingham urged the players at half time not to get complacent, and to continue to play with composure as it was likely that Wisbech would come out fighting in the second half. This they did, having changed their formation but once again, the Hunters’ resolve was strong and they continued to enjoy most of the possession. The second half was goalless until an uncharacteristic mistrap in the defensive circle led to Wisbech scoring a consolation goal. For the away team it was too little too late, and the whistle blew shortly afterwards with the Hunters winning 3-1. It was such a brilliant team effort that the whole Team was named Player of the Match, but a special mention should go to Amy Wilkinson whose efforts on and off the ball were exemplary!
